THE COMMUNITY
|

Situated on an island at the mouth of the Fraser River,
Richmond began as a collection of small farming and fishing
communities over 100 years ago. Today, Richmond is a booming
and very cosmopolitan city of over 145,000 residents.
The city has an increasingly diverse economic base, including
fishing, farming, manufacturing, high technology electronics,
and is home to the recently expanded Vancouver International
Airport. Similarly, Richmond boasts a wide range of cultural,
recreational and sporting facilities available to the
public. The school is located in West Richmond in the
heart of a generally affluent, middle class neighborhood.
Like most areas in the Greater Vancouver Regional District,
the demographics of Richmond have changed dramatically
in the past decade. The city is home to a large and vibrant
Asian population and the school age English as a Second
Language population in Richmond has grown from about 200
in 1988 to over 10,000 in September of 1996, representing
42% of the total District population.
