COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The primary goal of the E.S.L. programme
at London is to help students develop proficiency in English
language acquisition and, in so doing, cultivate academic
and social competence. Initial placements to the programme,
are carried out by district E.S.L. staff. Students in the
E.S.L. programmes are also enrolled in courses in other
subject areas. The number of E.S.L. courses to which each
student is assigned is dependent upon their individual proficiency.
As students gain greater competence in English, their course
load in other subject areas is increased accordingly. The
language skills in the 4 strands (reading, writing, speaking
and listening) will be emphasized in all E.S.L. courses.
Grade 9 students in E.S.L. 1 may audit Science. Grade 9
through 12 students in E.S.L. 2 – 4 will take all
other courses for credit except when identified by their
teacher in consultation with the E.S.L. teacher for auditing.
