CHARLES E. LONDON SECONDARY SCHOOL

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Goals and Philosophy

Contemporary medical research overwhelmingly supports the view that physical education is the foundation upon which an individual can build a good standard of health and improve the overall quality of their life. For high school students, regular physical activity and the understanding of physical fitness as an integral component of complete health is of paramount importance in coping with the stresses and challenges of teenage life, and in preparation for a healthy transition into adulthood. The Physical Education department at London offers a range of activities in a positive, challenging and supportive environment for all students. We believe that regular, quality physical education should be enjoyed by all young people. As such, our primary aim is to expose students to the potential benefits of participating in regularly scheduled physical activity in active, informative and enjoyable classes. Our graduation level courses in Grades 11 and 12 are ideal for students interested in continuing to develop their personal growth and understanding of leadership, health, fitness and recreation as well as students hoping to continue on in careers in physical education, recreation and health.

Physical Education 9 (Boys 105/Girls 106)
The goal of this course is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to maintain physical health throughout their lives. Our aim is to have students appreciate the paramount importance of physical well being and its relationship to the intellectual, mental, and social health of all individuals. Students will actively participate in a wide variety of physical activities and learn to understand and monitor their personal fitness level.

Physical Education 10 (Boys 205/Girls 206 )(PE 10)
The goal of this course is to refine the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to maintain physical health throughout students’ lives. Our aim is to have students appreciate the paramount importance of physical well being and its relationship to the intellectual, mental and social health of all individuals, and by grade 10, develop of repertoire of physical exercise and activity that they can continue into adulthood. Students will actively participate in a wide variety of physical activities and build on concepts learned in earlier grades to understand and monitor their personal fitness level.

Physical Education 11 (305) (PE 11)
P.E. 11 emphasizes the preparation for an active and healthy lifestyle after students leave school. Students will participate and develop skills in a variety of physical activities that have the potential for lifelong involvement. Lifetime sports and leisure activities are the major focus. The programme will consist of activities which use both school and community facilities. Field trips will include a two-day camping experience along with other outings, such as curling, squash, hiking, golf and tennis. Students will be required to organize, coordinate and lead a school event, such as, the Milk Run, in order to meet the Personal and Social Responsibility components of this course.
PE 11 satisfies the Applied Skills 11 credit needed for graduation. Course Fee is required - $130.00

Physical Education 12 (405) (PE 12).
Physical Education 12 will continue to emphasize the lifetime activities and pursuit of total wellness begun in Physical Education 11. The course seeks to develop in students the leadership and organizational skills needed to develop, organize and lead recreational and school programs at London. A variety of community activities will be undertaken including some water-based events such as Kayaking, windsurfing or sailing Course fee is $130.00.
