History 12 (409) (HI 12) - Prerequisite: Social Studies 11
History 12 is the study of geopolitical events, ideas, and the people that have helped to shape our world today. The course focuses on political, technological, ideological, economic and social trends from World War One to the fall of communism in 1991. Students will explore major conflicts like World War II, and the Cold War. As well, time will be devoted for delving into modern Chinese, Middle Eastern, and Indian history. History 12 is not simply the regurgitation of dates and events, but students critically analyze and synthesize the actions of the great powers and leaders of our century. Writing skills and the willingness to discuss and debate various controversial topics are paramount. History 12 has a provincial exam worth 40% of the final grade.
Geography 12 (412) (GEO 12) - Prerequisite: Social Studies 11
Geography is a sampling of various topics including weather, climate, volcanoes, earthquakes, landscapes (glacial, river, desert, coastal, etc.), mapping, and an array of environmental issues. The course is a provincially examinable course (worth 40% of the final grade) and is recognized by post secondary institutions for entrance requirements. It is also a prep course for a first year physical geography course (a lab science). Each semester we embark on one major field trip in order to interact with the material we have been studying in class. Students need to be aware of the following information regarding field trips:
• Trips are optional, but space is limited.
• Students are responsible for their own trip costs.
• A deposit, to reserve your seat, is collected in May/June, in your grade 11 year.
