In Grade 9, students are exposed to a comprehensive range of electives designed to meet both their curricular needs. A second language course is optional at the grade 9 level. However, students are strongly encouraged to continue their study of French, or choose to take Japanese 9. Acquisition of a second language at the secondary school level is a requirement of many post-secondary institutions.
In grade 10, English and Social Studies are explored as separate courses. Planning 10 is a mandatory course for the new graduation program. Students have the opportunity to select electives to complete their program.
It is strongly advised that students begin to consider a focus area of study with their electives that reflects their post-secondary and career aspirations. MacNeill Secondary School is able to offer elective choices that support all eight suggested focus areas including: Business and Applied Business; Fine Arts, Design and Media; Fitness and Recreation; Health and Human Services; Liberal Arts and Humanities; Science and Applied Science; Tourism, Hospitality, and Foods; Trades and Technology.
Students in grade 11 must carefully consider their academic choices as they are required to make decisions involving Mathematics, Science, and focus area elective choices.
Students entering grade 10 in September 2004 or later must meet the requirements of the New Graduation Program. 80 credits must be earned over grades 10, 11, and 12. Courses numbered grade 10, 11, or 12 earn 4 credits towards graduation.
