Strathcona Trip: Equipment List

GRADE 8 students will do an overall program that will touch on most of the above activities but much more briefly.  They will do some hiking, and lake water kayaking and canoeing.  In addition, they will do the high and ropes courses and some rock climbing.  As for camping, grade 8 students will spend one night out and the other three nights in a lodge-type building.

GRADE 9-12 students will choose from the "specific trips" list and spend anywhere from 2-3 nights out camping.

Specific Trips        (This section is equipment SPECIFICALLY SUITED to the specific trips, in addition to the 'General List' below.)

Brewster Lake           Rock Climbing                   Caving          Marble Meadows/Elk River Trail          King's Peak

White Water Trips               Canoe Hikes             Sea Kayak and Canoe

In General              (This section applies to EVERYONE, and especially grade 8 students.)

Students should be prepared for warm, cool, and wet weather.  It is therefore important to dress in layers so they can be taken off or be put on when appropriate.  Quantities of each item will vary between individuals.  Just remember that we will be gone for 5 days, and things will get dirty and wet.  Also, you should be able to carry ALL of your belongings yourself.  DO NOT BRING electronics (i.e. cellular phones, cd players, mp3 players, etc.) or knives or UNNECESSARY VALUABLES (ie. birth certificate, bank cards, jewelry, etc.)  Students should be prepared for a variety of activities on land or water.

Clothing

Outer Layer

RAIN GEAR - should have some rubber content (marine rainwear) if possible.  a plastic poncho is NOT suitable.  this item can rip very easily and is not durable and should be used as a last resort.  gore-tex jackets are very suitable also.  students should be able to be outside, in the rain for HOURS and not get wet if the rain is falling from above.  (i.e. should be able to stand in a shower for an hour straight!)

Warm Jacket - water and wind resistant

COTTON IS NOT GOOD!!!!  When outdoors, cotton does not hold temperature well and it dries very slowly.  Avoid cotton, and cotton blends, as much as you can!!!!!

Warm Pants - for outdoors such as sweatpants, nylon track pants, NO jeans!
Warmth Layer - jacket, fleece jacket, sweatshirt/hoodie will all be suitable
Under Layer - t-shirts, sweat-wicking material would be best (polypropylene, dri-fit, clima-fit, etc.), long underwear (optional)
Hat + Toque - toques should be worn at night and when sleeping

Foot Wear - It is VERY likely your footwear will get wet.  Be sure to have 2 pairs.......so there is always a dry pair!
Hiking Boots - 1 pair of proper outdoor boots or shoes that will give support when hiking, water-resistant if possible
Runners - 1 pair
Aqua socks, water boots - depending on activities.
FLIP FLOPS are NOT suitable footwear on or near the water.  an old pair of shoes that can be laced up are much better.

Wool Socks - keep feet warm when wet

Underwear
few pairs of underwear and socks.  socks may get wet so plan appropriately.  long underwear is optional

Change of clothes for travel time on bus and to "hang out" in during down time.

Sleeping Pad / Insulite pad (1)
