Independent Novel Project

Choose ONE assignment from each section.  Each will be given 10 marks.

Part A – Setting

1.  Make a map of where the events in the book take place.

2.  Make three illustrations of different settings in the book and label them.

3.  Draw a picture of the setting of the climax. In a paragraph, explain why the author chose to have the action take place here.

4.  Make a travel brochure advertising the setting of the story.

5.  Write a one page description of the settings in the story.

Part B – Characters

1.  Interview a character from your book. Write at least ten questions that will give the character the opportunity to discuss his/her thoughts and feelings about his/her role in the story.

2.  Write a diary that one of the story's main characters might have kept before, during, or after the book's events. Remember that the character's thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary.

3.  Dress as one of the characters and act out a characterization.  Write out your plan and I will take a photograph of you dressed up to include with the write-up in your booklet.

4.  Write a one-page letter to the main character of your book asking questions, protesting a situation, and/or making a complaint and/or a suggestion. This must be done in the correct letter format.

5.  Write a FULL (physical, emotional, relational) description of two of the characters in the book. Draw a portrait to accompany each description.

Part C – Plot

1.  Write a feature article (with a headline) that tells the story of the book as it might be found on the front page of a newspaper in the town where the story takes place.

2.  Choose five "artifacts" from the book that best illustrate the happenings and meanings of the story. Tell why you chose each one.

3.  Stories are made up on conflicts and solutions. Choose three conflicts that take place in the story and give the solutions. Is there one that you wish had been handled differently?

4.  Write and perform an original song that tells the story of the book.  (You can use a familiar song and change the words.)

5.  Write a one sentence summary of each chapter and illustrate 10 of the  sentences.

6.  Write at least ten questions for the book and give detailed answers.

Part D – Response to Book

1.  Imagine that you are the author of the book you have just read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a movie producer trying to get that person interested in making your book into a movie. Explain why the story, characters, conflicts, etc., would make a good film. Suggest a filming location and the actors to play the various roles. YOU MAY ONLY USE BOOKS WHICH HAVE NOT ALREADY BEEN MADE INTO MOVIES.

2.  Write a book review following the format we used for Maniac Magee.  Be sure to consult your writing duo-tang for the list of what is in effective book reviews.

3.  Write a one-page response to the book.  Be sure to include your own thoughts and feelings and make text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections.

PART E – Title Page

Everyone must do this.  Be sure to include a picture that would be suitable for a book cover, the book title neat and prominent, the book author, and your first and last name on the lower right hand corner.

Total Marks – 50

Dates – Book must be read by Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the latest.
You may do the project in any order.
Hand in 2 assignments by Friday, Jan. 30
Hand in next 2 assignments by Friday, Feb. 6
Have cover ready for Tuesday, Feb. 10
(If you are ready to begin earlier and have assignments ready earlier, that is great)

Please use standard 8 1/2  x  11 paper for all assignments.


Rain forest Animal Classification Mini-Project

1.  Select the animal to be studied.

2.  Create a poster, must include:
        • Title (name of animal)
        • Illustration of animal
        • Full classification of your animal
        E.g. Animal -- Vertebrate – Amphibian – Frog – Poison Arrow Tree Frog
        (See if you can find the Latin classification as well)
        • Paragraphs on
a) Appearance – be sure to describe colouring and any unique features
b) Habitat – which layer of the rain forest does the animal live in, describe it, how does the habitat affect the animal
c)  Life cycle – reproduction, taking care of the young, is the animal endangered
        • Diagram of a food chain which your animal is part of
